Plain language: it’s about access to justice
As part of our focus on client service, we’re simplifying the content and language of communications with appellants, and cutting down on legalese by using plain language.
Right now we’re reviewing all our written materials, including letters, forms and web content.
We have also started a plain language training program for Tribunal members to help them write their decisions in a simpler way.
Our approach is based on advice from a plain language expert, using a readability assessment that was done especially for the Tribunal.
Appellants are entitled to understand how our appeal process affects their rights. At its core, plain language is about respect for the reader – and legalese is nobody’s language. That’s why plain language is a key element of our work to make the appeal process more accessible for Canadians.
