Alternative Dispute Resolution: A different way to resolve appeals

At the Social Security Tribunal, we’re constantly working to find new ways to make the appeal process simpler and faster. That’s why we’re offering another way to resolve cases at the Appeal Division: Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).

In ADR, an Appeal Division member helps the parties resolve the appeal informally. ADR offers an opportunity for the parties to talk directly with each other and to focus on the issues most important to them. ADR may lead to a quicker resolution of the appeal. If the appeal is not settled, it continues in the regular appeal process without any added delay.

Appeal Division members identify appeals that are suitable for ADR. Or, if you think there’s a good chance that you and the other party can reach an agreement on your appeal, you can request ADR.

If we can resolve an appeal without having to hold a hearing, this is a positive outcome for everyone. We’re committed to providing all Canadians with access to justice, and we’re working hard to make that access simpler and faster.
