Social Security Tribunal of Canada

An easier process to start your appeal

The Social Security Tribunal has changed the requirements to start an appeal. This will reduce the burden on you and speed up the process.

As of December 4, 2018, we will start your General Division appeal if we have the following information:

  • a copy of the reconsideration decision;
  • the grounds (reasons) for your appeal;
  • your social insurance number or business number;
  • your full name;
  • your phone number; and
  • your address.

Previously, the requirements to start an appeal were more complicated. We did not start your appeal until all the information listed in section 24 of the Social Security Tribunal Regulations was received. This caused delays before your appeal could even begin. Paragraph 3(1)(b) of the Regulations says that we can change these requirements – so we have. This means more appeals will get moving faster.

If your appeal is missing any of the required information, we will act as quickly as possible to fill in those gaps. This is one of the reasons we encourage you to communicate with us by email – the quicker we can reach you, the quicker we can get your appeal moving.
